The city of Vilanculos is located 750 km north of Maputo and 300 km north of Inhambane. As the second largest city of the province, Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. In past colonial times Vilanculos was once the destination for the rich and famous in Mozambique; nowadays the Bazaruto Islands hold the status of exclusivity and luxury lodges.
