The provincial capital Inhambane City is located on the sheltered shores of the Inhambane bay overlooking the tranquil waters of the bay and the mainland three kilometres across from the peninsula. The historical trading port dates back to the 11th century, when Arabic traders sailed along the east African coast and exchanged commodities such as textiles and ivory with local communities.
