Historically Tofo Beach has been a sea side holiday destination for mainly Portuguese visitors, most of the village buildings origin from Colonial times and show Portuguese influences from the 1920´s to the 1970´s. After the liberation war most colonial buildings were given to new Mozambican owners. Most buildings are meanwhile rehabilitated and the latin architectural influence gives a special ambiance to the small fishing village.
Protected by a nice little bay and an outer reef, local fishermen have used Tofo Bay for many years as a launching site for their small fishing boats. The daily fresh catch is sold either directly on the beach or in the heart of Tofo at the local market.
The City of Inhambane, with the regional airport, is 17 km away from Tofo Beach; the access to the village is reached via a tarred road crossing the peninsula from one side to the other. The road leads along endless palm tree plantages that were introduced in colonial Portuguese times.
