Tofo Beach, Inhambane, Mozambique. One of the best scuba diving spots on the East African coastline. Maybe the best one! The main reason to come to Tofo Beach are Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. Both species can be seen through out the year.
Scuba diving in Tofo is possible all year round. There are up to 16 scuba dive sites that can be explored, and new sites are being discovered regularly. Depths may
vary between 10 to 40 meters; and every scuba diver will be able to dive in
Tofo, even though deeper dives are for advanced scuba divers only. Visibility depends
on the daily conditions with regards to plankton, currents, wind and tides, but is usually between 5 and 30 meters. The water temperature varies from 23 to 29 degrees celsius depending on the time of the year.
The underwater world around Tofo Beach carries large amounts of nutritious plankton, attracting many different species of marine life. Leopard
sharks, sea turtles, devil rays, honeycomb morays, potato groupers, sea
moths, frog fish, spanish dancers, scorpion fish, barracudas, crocodile
fish, nudibranches, and harlequin shrimps are just a few examples of what can be spotted.
A list of some of the species from Tofo´s underwater world follows:
Manta Rays are resident around Tofo waters and are seen
throughout the year. This beautiful species can grow up up to 8m in
width! Manta rays are a frequent site on cleaning stations on many of
the scuba dive sites around Tofo Beach at depths between 20 to 30 meters.
These cleaning stations are mainly colorful soft coral formations where
Manta Rays stop to get cleaned by different species of cleaner fish!
Whale Sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean and can reach up
to 14 meters in
length. These gentle plankton eaters can be seen through out the year
in Tofo, where the average size is between 6 and 8 meters. Whale Sharks
are best spotted on route to scuba dive sites or on ocean safaris. One
often has the opportunity to snorkel with these gentle giants. Ocean
safaris are 2 hour snorkeling trips where whale sharks, dolphins,
manta rays, sea turtles are spotted on a regular basis. In our winter season,
humpback whales are one of the main attractions on the ocean safaris and
the "Tofo Big Five” can be seen on one single boat trip.
Humpback Whales are on their migration route from early July until early November. They come from Antarctica to the warmer waters of the eastern shores of Africa, in order to mate and to give birth to their youngsters. Humpback Whales can be spotted from the land, as well a out at sea on the way to your scuba dive site. The humpback whale songs can be heard on almost every single scuba dive! Don't forget to bring your binoculars.
Dolphins are usually spotted in groups, and are sighted throughout the year.Tofo has many different species of dolphins, including bottle nose, humpback and spinner dolphins. Small eye Stingray is the worlds largest sting ray, and was recently identified in Tofo by marine Biologist Dr. Simon Pierce. The species is a common sight off Tofo, one of the only places it has ever been sighted alive. DIVING CENTERS
